One of the most important parts of a house is one you may not look at much but it’s always over your head. A roof keeps the weather out and helps you maintain a comfortable temperature indoors during every season.

There are multiple options when it comes to roofing materials. Choosing which is best is a personal decision based on aesthetics, budget, and durability. Three popular options have their pros and cons.

Metal Roofs

In recent years, metal roofs, available from companies such as IKO roofing have become popular. Copper, zinc, aluminum, and stainless steel are the available options. Metal is highly resistant to weather and reflects back sunlight to help the house stay cool.

Metal is long-lasting, however, it is more expensive than more traditional materials and has a modern look that doesn’t necessarily work on older homes.

Asphalt Shingle Roofs

By far, the most commonly used roofing material in the U.S. is asphalt shingles. They come in a wide variety of colors such as those offered by IKO shingles and they are less expensive than the other options. Asphalt shingles look great on older-style homes and are relatively easy to install.

The downside is that asphalt doesn’t last as long as other roofing materials. It also does not provide nearly as much insulation.

Concrete and Clay Tile Roofs

Concrete and clay tiles have a distinctive, textural look that works well on Southwestern and Spanish-style homes. They come in flat, scalloped, or ribbed shapes for a variety of looks. They are very durable but costly and extremely heavy. Professional roofers with special skills are required to install tiles.

Your roof is certainly no place to skimp. The type of material you choose to cap your house is a personal choice. Consider the options based on your budget, home style, and the climate where you live. Talk to a good roofer for expert advice.
